Chatting with Mei Ling (4,5,6)

Last time, we spoke about the first three episodes of緣。來自Mei Ling, hope you enjoyed the show. If you have missed them, you can view them in the ATV website or on YouTube  . In the next 3 episodes 4,5,6, we shall be discussing the topics of Divorce (離婚), Working Hard for Love(為愛情而努力) and Marrying For Money (嫁錢娶錢).

Firstly, in the “Diamond Singles” session,  Bessie, a senior manager in a large multi national corporation,  appeared in Episode 4, talking about her divorce, the whys and wherefores, how she liberated herself,  the consequences and how she eventually faced and addressed her problems as a single mom in her forties with two children... Her open confession was insightful, factual, and refreshingly candid.

Mike, the former Deputy Attorney General of Hawaii and now Managing Director of a large financial institution in HK, told us why a man like himself, has difficulty finding a girlfriend in Hong Kong and what sort of ladies he is looking for. Ivan, graduated from Peking University, came to complete his Master’s here and has stayed on to work here ever since. He likewise admits that the cultural differences between Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese women are substantial. He confesses to being intensely traditional and that family approval would play a serious part in his selection of a spouse.

Jack, the finance editor of a leading local newspaper and Julien, whose father is Chinese and mother is French are both local brew and represent a dating culture quite different to the aforementioned gentlemen. Jack talks openly about his thoughts on men marrying wealthy wives (男人入贅) while Julien discusses how best to handle dating expenses... Most interesting discussions indeed.

On the Self Enhancement Program front, we interviewed different speakers for three Inspirational talks at the PEAK College.  Chef Tom was the first. We learned how this Englishman started from nothing to become the Chef of most Hollywood stars in HK including Keanu Reeve, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Victoria Beckham…etc.etc. and finally, a wealthy client decided to bankroll him and a new business empire is born...all within just a few years. May be it was luck the first time, but then the second, third, fourth time.. ??  luck again ? or did he make his own luck?  how? There are so many good chefs in HK, why him? What has he got to offer besides culinary skills?

The second was Conway, who started his life with all the odds in the world against him. Born during the war, he escaped to HK with barely a shirt on his back, lived in a wooden hut (木屋區) and would have been so grateful if only he had the luxury of a partitioned room (剔房)with water & electricity. As a child laborer, he toiled in a sweat shop  until age 15 and started to learn A,B,C.. in the toilet of a workers’ dormitory,  because “lights out” by 10pm was mandatory, toilet was the only source of “free” lighting where he did not have to pay for the electricity. Today he is a highly successful entrepreneur and an author of two bestsellers, both published in impeccable English. He has prevailed against all odds.

The third were a photographer KK and his wife Serina. When the “film era” was replaced by the “digital era”, many photo shops went out of business. A couple’s strong bond of love, commitment and tenacity saw them through hard times, SARS and they come out winning. Today, with 5000 sq ft, theirs is one of the most successful  photo studios , capturing memorable photos of graduates from most universities, high schools, kindergartens … to families, pets, legco members…etc.etc.  Determination & hard work has paid off.

  Enjoy the show.
