Occupying Central

Friends from the media have been asking me many questions regarding my position in the topic, “Occupying Central”. I promised  to answer them in my column.

1)Do you support the fight for universal suffrage? A“Real” election as versus a “Fake” one?

I cannot tell the difference between a “real” election and a “fake” election because I’ve never had one. I was born in the British colony of HK where the governor was sent to us by Britain. There were many governors in my life time, some good ones, some bad ones. Nobody ever asked us. From not having any say  to having a vote at all, that to me is already a huge improvement !

2)The Beijing government is distorting the fundamentals of our election, as a relationship expert, would you advocate your followers to stand up and fight for their rights?

If we had no food, no job, a corrupt government & civilians were suffering… Yes, I would certainly stand up and fight. But that isn’t the case now. If I was to fight, I would only be fighting for what others said it should be ! A bit reminiscent of the immigration fever prior to the 1997 handover. Many sold their flats to move away based on hearsay, seemed like a good idea at the time… The lucky ones returned but no longer able to buy a flat. The unlucky ones can’t even return home…dreadfully unhappy in their adopted countries - they had made drastic decisions based on other people’s opinion. Sorry, I don’t feel sufficiently vehement to stand up and fight, I wouldn’t know what I am fighting for !

3)In other words, you are accepting this  “small circle” election?

The leaders of the Student Union (學聯) were NOT voted by one student one vote ! They were only voted into position by 300 votes ! THAT in itself,  is “small circle” election.

In Sept 2013, the student population of HK looks like this:

By any standard, 300 votes representing 573,450 students is very “small circle” indeed. The above figures have not even included the NAC( Education for Newly Arrived Children), NCS (Education for Non-Chinese Speaking students), QF (Qualifications Frame-work),  Adult Education, Specialized Education (e.g. Information Technology, accounting, secretarial, nursing, language, music schools… private tutorial etc.etc. ) To include these figures, the percentage representation is very close to voting a Chief Executive with 1200 votes.

4)Don’t you want to live in a more democratic society? To ensure that our future generations will enjoy true democracy ?

According to the very thorough Democracy Survey conducted by The Economist, contrary to what most people believe, America is surprisingly, not within the top ten of the most democratic countries in the world, in fact, not even within the top fifteen ! So they really shouldn’t be pointing fingers.  In synopsis :

(A)Countries with a higher democratic ranking than Hong Kong include Sri Lanka, Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh…

(B)Taiwan is considered a “flawed democracy”, Singapore and Thailand a “hybrid regime”…

all even worse than Hong Kong.

In all honesty, given a choice, I would rather live in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore or Thailand with lesser and "inferior" democracy than to live in the likes of Bangladesh with more and "better" democracy.

One thing is for sure, no one can justify ruining the economy, rule of law, image and future of Hong Kong in the name of democracy. For the sake of this and future generations, let there be peace.
