札記5 -Empty talks will never compare to on-site investigation.
As we are designing a device which we plan to place near stairs and slopes, we understand it is very important to consider its practicality because the actual situation might end up being different from what we expect. Moreover, empty talks will never compare to on-site investigation.
Therefore, before dwelling on the actual model design, we went to the Central Western District to collect information on a number of components of our model, including the handrails, gradient of slopes, etc. We did measurements on them in order to have accurate data which favours the design of our prototype. This field trip helped us focus more on the status quo of the district. For instance, there are many types of handrail across the city, while each design has a different purpose to serve. During the field trip, we were able to spot the types of handrail more commonly found in the district, and more importantly, the common types along stairs and slopes. Apart from that, we figured out how we can attach our device onto the existing handrail without having to remove the existing ones and place a new one, which would not only increase the cost and would cause inconvenience due to construction works, moreover, this alternative is crucial as one of our aims is to conserve and protect the original form of the district.
During the field trip, we were able to identify a number of problems that we have to tackle in our model design. For example, we found out that there is a gap between handrails, and for a very long slope or stairs, they are separated into different sections and there are platforms in between, meaning we have to place more than one device in this situation. In addition, we realise that we have to add a special function to our device so that it will be able to run smoothly along handrails. These are the challenges that we will be facing in our prototype design, as well as concerns we have to address in order to perfect our device.
After visiting a number of sites in the district, we have chosen a suitable site to be the first place where we place and test our our device.
What we’re trying to do may seem impossible, but our aim is down to earth: we hope our device could contribute to the betterment of the community, as well as bring convenience to the residents. Because at the end of the day, it’s not really about how much we’ve accomplished, it’s about how we’ve tried to make this place better.
